Sugar Cookies Recipe

Everyone has a “go to” cookie recipe and this is my favorite, and most versatile, sugar cookie recipe. Over the years, I have tried a number of sugar cookie recipes from recipe books like Jingle Bells and Pastry Shells Cookbook and I end up back at this one. One reason is that I prefer very thin sugar cookies and this dough gives me the best results. Not that the sugar cookies can’t be cut out thicker with this dough because they can. You can also make a minor adjustment in the recipe to give it a less butterfly flavor for icing-covered cookies and change the cookie flavor, too.

To make the simple thin buttery sugar cookies dusted in sugar before baking, this is a wonderful choice for making themed cookies for any occasion. We tend the think about sugar cookies for Christmas but they can also be made through the year for birthdays or holidays or whenever you want a little sweet treat. The challenge is picking the right cookie cutter shape!

Buttery Sugar Cookies Recipe

1 tbsp milk

1 1/4 cup flour

1/4 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until smooth. Add milk until mixed. Add dry ingredients. Cover and let chill.

Dust counter top and rolling pin with flour; roll out as thick or think as desired. Dust cookie cutter with flour, then cut out cookies.

Brush cookie sheet with butter or shortening to keep cookies from sticking.

Bake in 350F for 10 minutes or until brown around the edges. You can also bake in 425F oven but watch them carefully, especially if thin or they will burn fast. I use the lower temperature for thin cookies and the higher temperature for thicker sugar cookies.

By baking at a lower temperature, I can also time having one cookie sheet ready to bake as soon as the previous one has finished baking.

Make the same way as you would the buttery sugar cookie version. .

Revised Sugar Cookies Recipe

The basic cookie recipe calls for vanilla. For a refreshing twist, use lemon juice with a little lemon zest for a light summery cookie.

If you like orange, that’s a nice option as well. Use real orange juice and zest.

These sugar cookies all freeze nicely. Enjoy and have fun!
